Calderdale Industrial Museum sits in the heart of the vibrant heritage rich town of Halifax, the administrative capital of Calderdale. It tells the fascinating story of the Industrial Revolution as it unfolded in this region. The museum was saved and is now run by a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers, for the benefit of the local community, but also drawing visitors from around the world. Â We pride ourselves on being family friendly and fully accessible for those with access issues.
The volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, but all bring their skills to ensure that the museum can continue to open for the benefit of our local community and visitors to our region. We currently have a lovely example of a modified Spinning Jenny Spinning and probably the oldest working powered loom in the world. We are rightly proud of the work we do and love to share our knowledge and experience with our visitors on open days.
We have several projects for 2026 which will enhance your visit, including bringing machinery to the top floor Worsted Gallery. This will enable us to finish several years’ work to reopen the final part of the museum. We have been excited to see the rebuilding of the Noble Comb and the Platt Brothers Worsted Mule, both of which will form an integral part of this new Worsted Gallery.
During 2025, work has continued bringing steam back to our beautiful stationary steam engines in the Power Gallery and we hope that 2026 will see the engines running under steam again.
Our Terry Sutton gallery is home to our changing range of special exhibitions which showcase the best of Calderdale’s creative past and present.
Our popular café offers a range of light lunches and  drinks to refresh you during your visit.
The museum is open 10 – 4pm on Saturday and also on Thursdays in local school holidays.
