A few steps from Henry II’s 12th century castle keep in the peaceful Suffolk village of Orford, The Crown and Castle has recently been awarded two AA rosettes for its fine cuisine. The 21-bedroom property has also received a much sought after five star restaurant with rooms classification.

Two rosettes are awarded to restaurants which achieve consistent high standards of cuisine prepared with precision and that give special attention to the selection of quality ingredients.

The creative British menu offered by Head Chef Jake Lawrence and his team features a wealth of top Suffolk produce including Orford landed seafood and locally reared meats, plus classic favourites and traditional roasts for Sunday lunch.

Guests at The Crown and Castle can expect oak beams, stylish décor and interesting artwork adorning the walls. There’s a traditional bar with an open fire, which can be found burning in the cooler months, also a large terrace for alfresco dining and drinking on warmer days within sight of the keep.

The Crown and Castle has recently refurbished seven rooms styled in recognition of well-known local landmarks. Spread across the entire first floor of its main building, each new room features bold accent colours and decorations, which reflect and acknowledge the local area’s heritage.

There has been a hostelry on the site of The Crown and Castle for eight centuries. The original inn was, apparently, built into the walls of the 12th century Orford Castle but is now separated from it by a little lane. Now under the care of English Heritage, the octagonal tower keep is very much intact and open to visitors.

Dogs are welcome to stay with their owners in one of the five dog-friendly rooms, which open directly into the garden. They can also sit with their owners on the terrace or in the bar while they dine and at a bookable dog-friendly table in the restaurant.
