Market Drayton Museum

Market Drayton Museum is a place where our past is treasured and where today, our welcoming team of Volunteer Stewards tell the ‘Story of Drayton’.   The Museum holds hundreds of documents and artefacts directly related to the history and development of the town and surrounding area .

Come and explore the displays for yourself, talk to one of our enthusiastic Museum Stewards who will share their knowledge and breathe life into the objects on display, you can handle the exhibits to get closer to the history of our town and its people, take a seat while you learn about the interesting tales of our town and reminisce over the memories brought back.

Our Grade II Listed timber-framed Museum building dates from the 17^th century and has its own history.   It was originally built as a family home but has undergone many changes over the years.   It has been a Butchers Shop until it became a Bicycle Shop and then a TV Sales and Rental Shop in the 20^th century.    In 2005 the old shop, by now much neglected, was bought by Drayton Civic Society with help from Heritage Lottery Grant Aid and transformed into our Town Museum.

Gallery One: Everything in this Gallery relates to the Story of Drayton and surrounding area and it holds the introductory exhibition, including a time-line of the town’s history from the Bronze Age to Present Day.   The People, Societies, Businesses, Buildings and Transport  telling the Story of how Drayton has changed and developed over the centuries are all on display here.

Gallery Two: What in the past has been the Parlour of the house, now houses our annually changing Exhibition.    For 2024 the theme is ‘Pubs & Breweries of Market Drayton’ and our ‘Parlour’ has become the Curator’s Arms to showcase our collection of pub memorabilia and highlight Drayton’s strong connection with brewing due to its location above a Triassic Sandstone Aquifer producing water ideal for brewing Pale Ales.

Admission is free but as the Museum is a Registered Charity, 504887, run entirely by volunteers and has no regular income or grants to rely on, donations of any amount are always greatly appreciated.
