Bolton Abbey

Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe, Bolton Abbey is a great Yorkshire day out!

The Yorkshire home of the 12th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, the Estate has been carefully managed by the Devonshire family since 1755.

The 30,000 acre Estate includes over 80 miles of footpaths crossing moorland, woodland and riverside landscapes. Landscapes that inspired some of the greatest artists including Turner, Ruskin, Royle and poet Wordsworth.

If looking for history and culture, you’ll find it around most corners, perhaps explore the ruins of the Priory and learn about the Augustinian canons that lived and worshipped here until 1539. Or perhaps dare to cross the stepping stones that were once the crossing point for the lay workers at the Priory. For those who do not wish to make the crossing there is a bridge offering a safe and dry passage!

For those looking for more entertainment, the Estate run a full events programme throughout the year, including the Welly Walk, an outdoor adventure trail, seasonal event trails at Easter and Halloween, outdoor cinema and Christmas events too.

Perhaps you just want a bit of peace and quiet in the outdoors which you can certainly find on one of the many miles of footpaths, with plenty of scenic opportunities for a picnic pit-stop.

With a great selection of eateries around the Estate too, you’re never far away from a good brew and delicious slice of homemade cake!
