The aim of the Museum is to bring the story of the Broads alive and it does that very well. Featured on Channel 4s Great Canal Journeys it has been a well-deserved finalist for the last few years in the EDP Tourism awards.
It’s the only waterside museum of Broadland life and is situated at historic Stalham Staithe. Two of the buildings were actually being previously used in the early 1800s for storing goods to be transported by Wherries on the rivers.
So why visit?
It has a number of superb displays which use a variety of media to tell the story of the Broads. Did you know for instance that the Vikings left their mark here?
A cracking range of boats from a famous Water bicycle, an airborne lifeboat, racing yachts, punts of all descriptions, an ice yacht and loads more.
But it’s not just about boats. There are loads to do for children including the Ellis Eel trail, steering mechanism, playboat, rope tying and loads more. Our younger visitors just love our dressing up box, and adults love our ‘Hats for Selfies’ too!
There are some great displays of life on the Broads about marshmen, boat builders and holidaymakers to what life was like in Broadland during WW1 and WW2.
Sailing back in time on the Victorian steam launch is a must and enables the visitors to see the Broads first hand – toot toot!
The riverside setting is great for picnics.
The shop and small cafe sell some cracking books and other gifts plus hot and cold drinks and ice cream.
