Norfolk Coastal Cottages with mYminiBreak

I have been running these two cottages for a long time now, and honestly, the thing that keeps striking me is how many people arrive looking a bit tired and leave looking like themselves again.

They are in Heacham — a proper seaside village on the North Norfolk coast, right on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beach is about a three-minute walk. The Norfolk Coast Path runs past the door. Wild Ken Hill, the rewilding project made famous by BBC Springwatch, is on the horizon. Seal colonies, salt marshes, RSPB reserves, lavender fields in summer — it is all here. People come once and start booking the next visit before they have unpacked the car.

Both cottages are 100% dog-friendly. Not “dogs tolerated with a sigh” dog-friendly — genuinely, properly, big-dogs-on-the-furniture dog-friendly. The beach is minutes away. The guests who bring dogs tend to be the ones who send the best messages afterwards.

We are also, apparently, the place where the BBC Springwatch crew like to stay when they are filming at Wild Ken Hill. We did not make that up. We are just very glad they keep coming back.

THE OLD BARN

The Old Barn sleeps four — a king-size room and a twin — and it has the kind of atmosphere that takes five minutes to settle into and three days to leave.

Exposed beams. Open-plan living. A proper kitchen, so you are not living off takeaways all week. A private courtyard for the evenings when you just want to sit outside with something cold and watch the sky do its thing.

It is the one couples tend to book when they need to remember how to talk to each other. Families book it when they want the kids close but not on top of them. It works for both. That is rare.

THE DAIRY

The Dairy is bigger — three bedrooms: a master, a double, and a bunk room for the ones who will be up at 6 am, regardless. A large garden. A fireplace for the evenings.

It is the cottage that groups come back to year after year. I have had families tell me their children now ask for “the Heacham cottage” by name. There is something about a garden that turns a holiday into a memory — space to actually do nothing, which turns out to be much harder to find than it sounds.

Dogs love the garden. Children love the garden. The parents love that both of those things are happening at the same time.

THE NORFOLK COAST PATH & WHAT’S OUT THERE

The Norfolk Coast Path runs right past the cottages, which means guests can walk directly onto a national trail from the front door — no car required, no logistics, just boots and off you go.

Head west and you hit the beach at Holme-next-the-Sea, where a 4,000-year-old Bronze Age timber circle was discovered on the foreshore in 1998. Older than Stonehenge’s final phase. Featured in the British Museum’s World of Stonehenge exhibition. You can stand on that exact beach. It does not feel like anything.

Head south along the coast path and you walk through Wild Ken Hill rewilding estate — the BBC Springwatch filming location — and on to RSPB Snettisham, where up to 300,000 knot waders murmur over the lagoons in one of Britain’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

In summer, the lavender fields at Heacham turn the fields behind the village purple. In spring, the marsh harriers are up over Titchwell. In winter, the seals come in near Blakeney Point, and the light on the salt marshes does something the photographs never quite capture.

It is not a bad stretch of coast. We are very glad to be on it.
