Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the Leach Pottery is probably the most famous and certainly the most influential studio pottery in the world.
For decades it forged the shape of studio pottery production in the UK and beyond. Scores of potters, students and apprentices trained here, attracted from all across the world and creating an unusual mix of the very local and the completely global. Today the Leach Pottery is a living tribute to Bernard Leach and his legacy.
Studio
The purpose built new studio houses our resident professional potters and degree students. It also provides flexible workspace for visiting international artists, apprentices, short course and intensive course participants.
The tableware produced is sold through the Leach Pottery shop, website and through a small number of quality shops and outlets.
The Leach Pottery is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
Exhibitions and Museum
As well as the old workshop built by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the Museum also houses a 3-chambered climbing kiln from the 1920s.
We hold exhibitions of historical and contemporary ceramics.
Education
Education is at the heart of our work at the Leach Pottery ranging from schools’ workshops and family sessions to professional development and postgraduate studies.
Pottery Sales
We sell a very wide range of pottery from different makers – many of whom have worked in the old pottery workshop.
