Spring Field Dark Skies Campsite

Are you ready for a real off-grid experience? One with spectacular views over hills on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lots of walking options right from the camping field (all the better for exercising any accompanying dogs)… and the chance to see buzzards or red kites flying overhead? If it’s yes to all those questions, then haste ye to Springfield Park House.

On-site numbers are kept low to provide spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe of the place. Facilities are simple: solar power for the electricity and a private water supply (there’s also wifi – the kids will be pleased).

Our objective is to operate this campsite as Carbon Neutral as possible. We hope you appreciate our efforts to make this site Eco Friendly.

Below are just some of the Green activities that happen behind the scenes of the campsite.

• 100% of electricity here is generated on site from a commercial 15kw Solar array on our farm buildings. The objective is not to use any power from the National Grid. A substantial investment and our main carbon saving element.

• Electrical storage is used to maintain supplies through the night. Our electricity does cost a little more than some sites. We hope you appreciate the reason why this is so and use electricity sparingly.

• Surplus Solar power generated during the day is exported to the National Grid, at present about 60%, further reducing our Carbon footprint.

• In the event of a shortfall of power in bad weather or winter, we have a standby generator which uses Green HVO fuel. This produces 90% less CO2 than diesel fuel and is 100% renewable, but as always, its more expensive to be Green.

• Water from our own borehole (Drilled in 1947!) to an underground pure aquifer 180ft deep beneath your feet. (Not from the River Severn that has been recycled several times) Without chlorine or fluoride added.

• Waste water from toilets and washing processes passes through an aerobic and then anaerobic living reed-bed complex. This is to ensure we do not pollute the ground water table or any streams locally.

• Yellow Iris Flag flowers around the evaporation pond are not for show, they take up any micro nitrates remaining further purifying the water.
• The evaporation pond has fish, frogs and toads and numerous giant Dragon Flies supporting a wide range of wild life.

• Wood for Fire-Pits comes from our own resources, processed by ourselves and has zero transport miles. A fully renewable resource. Outsourced firewood may not be so environmentally friendly.

• General refuse waste (Red Bin) is handled by an outside contractor certifying 100% “Zero to Landfill.” Higher service costs than sending waste to landfill.

• Cans, plastic and glass are processed separately for recycling Purple Bin, as is paper and cardboard. Blue Bag.

• The lawn mowers we use to keep our grass in good condition run on Green HVO fuel. 90% less CO2 polluting than diesel. HVO fuel is 40% more expensive than diesel and is a fully renewable resource.

Fair usage of electricity policy. Our Off-Grid electricity supply is limited and we request you not to use high power overnight heaters which will exhaust our storage capacity.

We hope this explains our aims and that your stay with us is as environmentally friendly as we can make it without affecting your enjoyment. Our campsite is significantly less polluting than your average campsite and we believe more sustainable.
