The National Coal Mining Museum
The National Coal Mining Museum |
|
The National Coal Mining Museum for England offers you the unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground, down one of Britain’s oldest working mines. Take a step back in time with an ex-miner as your guide who will take you around the underground workings, where models and machinery depict methods and conditions of mining from the early 1800s to the present day. Above ground, the story of coal is brought to life through the Museum’s new interactive exhibitions and audio-visual plasma screens. You can also ride the train, an original underground locomotive used at Prince of Wales Colliery, and take in the views from one end of the site to the other. Visit the pit-head baths and the Victorian steam winder, follow the nature trail and find the new adventure playground, then meet the last ever working pit ponies, now enjoying their retirement along with Colonel the shire horse. The latest addition to the Museum is the restored Hope Pit complex, a secondary colliery site at the Museum. Here visitors can explore the interactive displays and multi-media science exhibits. The science of coal mining bursts into life and promises to send you away buzzing with ideas! And when you need a rest, visit the Museum café, which serves a range of traditional Yorkshire fayre and incorporates a fully licensed bar. Then bag yourself some mining memorabilia in the well-stocked gift shop. Whatever you come to the National Coal Mining Museum for, you can be sure there’ll be plenty to keep you occupied. There is free admission to all visitors and opening hours 10.00 am - 5.00 pm daily except for 24-26 December and 1 January. Do arrive early to book onto an underground tour. Temperature underground is 12c; we strongly recommend warm practical clothing and sensible flat shoes. Unfortunately children under five years old are not permitted on the underground tour, however there is an indoor play area for children under five. Telephone 01924 848806 |
