Jorvik Viking Centre

At JORVIK Viking Centre you are standing on the site of an astounding archaeological discovery. Thirty years ago our archaeologists revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking Age city of Jorvik. They couldn't believe their eyes! Our experts excavated eight tonnes of deposits and unearthed over 40,000 Viking objects, preserved in remarkably good condition. They then studied these in such detail that we can now take you on a journey to Jorvik, the Viking Age city of York.
 
You will travel BACK 1000 Years on board your time machine through the backyards and houses to the bustling streets of Jorvik. Everything here is based on facts Ð from the layout of the houses, the working craftsmen, the language of the gossiping neighbours, to the smells of cooking and the cesspit! As you travel through the busy market place, you will experience a blast of smoke as you pass the blacksmith's furnace, smell the fish on the riverside and visit the hearth scene inside the Viking home. You are in JORVIK!
