 Visit Harrogate’s Mercer Art Gallery to see an exciting and diverse exhibition programme. 2007 sees a blockbuster exhibition William Powell Frith: Painting the Victorian Age which contains over 60 paintings, prints and drawings, many from private collections, and of course all of Frith’s major works, with loans from national and regional galleries around the country. William Powell Frith (1819-1909) was the greatest British painter of the social scene since Hogarth, and Harrogate’s most famous artist son. Also in 2007 see local artist’s work and shows from the permanent collection. Step across the road to the Royal Pump Room Museum, the site of Europe’s strongest sulphur well, here you can explore Harrogate’s history as a spa town, the famous guests, the treatments and finish with a glass of the infamous Harrogate water. Come “Behind the Seams at the Museum” to explore the museum’s amazing textile and costume collection until 18th February. From 3rd March enjoy ‘Victorian Life’. Find out all about work, play, fashion and shopping over 100 years ago, and how industry and transport changed the way we live. Nearby Knaresborough Castle stands towering above the River Nidd. Explore this Medieval Castle to discover the history of the Keep, underground sallyport & dungeon. Visit the rare Tudor courthouse & museum to explore Knaresborough’s intriguing history of royal residents & colourful local characters, including the hands-on ‘Life in a Castle gallery.
