The beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham is home of the famous Theakstons Brewery one of the proudest family breweries in Yorkshire. With its 180 year history the Brewery is definitely worth a visit. Established in 1827 by Robert Theakston who began brewing in the Black Bull, the original Masham Inn, before his son Thomas built the present brewery in 1875. The traditional Victorian brewhouse is still in operation today brewing the famous beers including the legendary Old Peculier. Also of interest is the working cooperage - visitors can watch the Theakston Cooper crafting the traditional wooden casks from a viewing window in the Heritage Centre; a rare sight as he is one of only two craft coopers in the brewing industry today. Wooden casks are still used to supply local pubs with Old Peculier. You don’t have to search far to find the Brewery in Masham, the aroma of brewing beer reaches you in and around the Marketplace, to let any visitor know which direction the Brewery lies. Today the Brewery is once again family owned and aids the local community in a wide range of continuous charitable events, besides providing employment for many residents in the Masham area. The Black Bull in Paradise. This is the Brewery’s Visitors Centre and is named after the original Black Bull Inn and Paradise fields the name of the fields where the Brewery stands today. Here you can indulge and sample the legendary Theakston Ales fresh from the Brewery whilst at the same time soaking up the Theakston history and heritage. Brewery Tours. Tours are taken around the original Victorian brewhouse, where visitors will experience the wonderful aromas of hops and malted barley and learn about the traditional art of brewing beer throughout all its stages. You may even see the Cooper, crafting the traditional wooden barrels. At the end of the tours visitors are invited to sample the beers in the warm friendly atmosphere of the brewery tap. Heritage Centre. Located in the Black Bull in Paradise, where you can experience a virtual tour given by Simon Theakston by audio and visual means, and also see the many historic brewery items saved over the years. Gift Shop. Located within the Black Bull in Paradise Visitor Centre offers a large selection of Peculierly Fine Gifts, Theakston souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights. Opening Times.
