The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is Britain’s most popular Heritage Railway carrying over 300,000 passengers a year. It runs 18 miles through the beautiful North York Moors National Park from the market town of Pickering to Grosmont, calling at Levisham, Newtondale, and Goathland. The village of Goathland is better known as Aidensfield in YTV’s popular Heartbeat series and was featured in the first Harry Potter film as Hogsmeade, where Harry attends the School of Witchcraft and Wizadry. 2006 saw a welcome return to steam between Grosmont to Whitby and during the season of 2007 services are operating over 105 days giving visitors the chance to combine the seaside and the moors in one superb day out. A day on the Railway offers more than just a ride on a steam train, with beautifully restored period stations, shops, refreshment rooms, locomotive viewing sheds, historical information, attractive walks and countryside. Whatever you want from a day out you’re sure to find it on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. 2006 saw the return to the rails of one of the most famous locomotives ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ following an extensive overhaul. Special events are run throughout the year, attracting all ages and all visitors - not just heritage enthusiasts. 2007 Events include the new LNER Festival, Steam Gala, Diesel Gala, Moors in the 60’s, Vintage Vehicle, Day Out With Thomas, Wartime Weekend, Wizard Weekend and Santa Specials.
