ImageHow Stean is a spectacular limestone gorge, situated in an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty,  in the very heart of Nidderdale among lush green pastures. Known as 'Yorkshire's Little Switzerland'  to the Victorians, the Gorge is crossed by narrow bridges between the rocky paths that lead down and across the rock face. The scenery is breathtaking, and the beck that runs through the Gorge can be anything from a gentle stream to a raging gushing torrent - depending on the rainfall and time of year. The Gorge is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and information is available about the features and formation of the Gorge when you purchase your ticket.

How Stean tunnel can be accessed, by the agile, and you can scramble along 30 meters if water conditions allow. There is a lengthy 8m drop - so beware!

Tom Taylor's Cave can be accessed by foot from the Gorge; it is about 500 feet long and can be explored by torchlight (for hire on site). Duck under the dripping stalactite and find where Tom supposedly hid from the law and met his grisly end near a stash of Roman coins.

The Gorge and Restaurant are open every day in season from 10.00am to 6.00 pm. From October - Easter open Wednesdays - Sundays 10.00am until dusk, open weekends only in January. Open every bank and school holiday.
