We are a high quality food retailer situated in the Vale of York on the A166 between Gate Helmsley and Stamford Bridge. This parcel of land has successfully grown soft fruit and vegetables in summer for the last 20 years. The Machin family have seen the site grow from the original wooden hut, with a table, on the side of the road to the fully fledged farmshop that it is today.

The Balloon Tree Farmshop opened in April 2004 and has enjoyed a successful run of awards since opening. Jill and Digby Machin are still heavily involved in the business, however their sons Matthew and Will now over see the managers on a day to day basis.

We are very lucky to have light sandy soil which gives a unique flavour to our homegrown produce. Our motto ‘Less Food miles, more farm yards’ encompasses everything we stand for. We ensure all our produce are top quality and as fresh as possible, our own produce is super-fresh as it comes straight from the field onto the shelves, and everything else we try and source locally.

Being a family run business, there is a unique feel, with a friendly, enthusiastic and passionate team of locally employed staff and family members.

Our kitchen uses ingredients from the farm to produce the cafe food as well as loads of things for the shop. The bakery produces all our cakes and things in-house.
