The Elgar Birthplace Museum gives a charming insight into the life and music, family and friends and development and inspirations of Sir Edward Elgar. One of England’s greatest composers, whose masterpieces include Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Salut d’Amour, Nimrod and the other Enigma Variations, the cello concerto, symphonies, The Dream of Gerontius and The Apostles. The cottage where Elgar was born in 1857 is set in the heart of his beloved Worcestershire countryside within a picturesque Edwardian garden, with views towards the Malvern Hills. Follow the fascinating story of Elgar’s musical development and inspirations, his early music making, his struggle for recognition and his subsequent fame, also his involvement in the pioneering days of recording, and his many honours and awards. See his desk laid out as it was when he was composing, his music scores and manuscripts, concert programmes, letters, photographs, books and even his gramophone. Learn about the man behind the familiar face on your £20 note and get a glimpse of the Victorian and Edwardian society in which he lived. Through his family photos, postcards, letters and many personal possessions, trace the story of his childhood and family life, his marriage to Alice and her devoted support. Discover his many hobbies such as golf, cycling round country lanes, scientific experiments and puzzles. His travels in the United States and Europe; and his final years revisiting childhood haunts are also featured. Complementing the cottage is the larger modern Elgar Centre with further displays, archive film footage and a recital room. An audio guide offers both spoken commentary and the chance to hear some wonderful music. The museum shop offers an unrivalled range of CDs, books, souvenirs, greeting cards and gifts. Eastnor Castle This fairytale castle is as dramatic inside as it is outside. A vast, 60 foot high Hall leads to a series of State Rooms and Gothic Drawing Room designed by Pugin, with its original furniture and to the Italian Renaissance style library which boasts magnificent views across the lake. |
