A fascinating collection of historic buildings which span seven centuries.  Avoncroft was    openied in 1967 and is a collection of twenty-five buildings which have been rescued and rebuilt on a beautiful fifteen acre site in North Worcestershire.

The collection of buildings includes : the Toll House, Bringsty Church and Ledbury Prison Cell from Victorian Britain; there is a Tudor  timber-framed Merchant’s House and String of Horses Building; and there is the more recent (post WW II) Arkon Mark V Prefab.

We visited Avoncroft on of their special events days - a 1940s weekend - on a beautiful summer day.  There were plenty of enthusiastic volunteers dressed in authentic 1940s outfits, ranging from RAF and army personnel, US and German forces, with plenty of civilians and even a couple of spivs !

Identity cards were issued which had to be carried and stamped at various checkpoints in the grounds.  The volunteers in costume were all very friendly and happy to share their 1940s knowledge with enthusiasm.

Events were laid on throughout the day, ranging from a rousing speech by the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, to a 1940s wedding service,  to a very noisy skirmish.

This was a very popular day - even the overflow car park was overflowing !
