Burford House Gardnes

ImageSituated where the borders of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire meet, Burford House Gardens is a wonderful place to visit for all lovers of horticulture.  It not only caters for those who want to look round a stunning garden, but also for those that want to return home complete with some stunning specimens purchased from the comprehensive nursery on site.

The gardens encompass seven acres of lawn and stunning borders that sweep along the banks of the picturesque River Teme.  Originally designed by the late John Treasure in 1952 around an early Georgian house (now a delightful interior furnishings shop), the gardens contain a National Clematis Collection, along with around 2000 other kinds of plants, including the magnificent Wisteria “Burford”, which in May cascades spectacularly down the back of the house.  A Georgian turfed bridge spans the river and leads to a wildflower meadow, offering contrast to the intensively nurtured gardens around the house.

During the summer there can be as many as eighty clematis in flower in the gardens at any one time, but some of these you might have to look a little hard to find, as they entwine with other plants or trail along the ground. The owners suggest that you linger in the very special place that is Burford House Gardens and sense the ‘genus loci’ - the spirit of the place.
After taking in the scene, why not have a coffee in their riverside café-bar, and then let them help you develop your beautiful garden.  Burford Garden Company’s store at Burford House Gardens has been designed to inspire and delight all garden lovers.  Together with everything imaginable for the English garden, they also specialise in clematis, the “Queen of Climbers”, which in popularity, is second only to the rose in Britain.  They have 200 hundred varieties for sale and all their hardy plants are covered by a comprehensive 10 year guarantee.  The Garden Centre is complimented by a superb shop inside Burford House, which retains its elegant interior and comforting log fires, but is now packed with inspirational home furnishings and accessories.

Burford House Gardens are located on the A456 between Tenbury Wells and Ludlow and are open daily between 9am and 6pm or dusk, whichever is earlier.
