Erasmus came to live in Lichfield in 1756 after failing to set up a successful medical practice in Nottingham. Soon after arriving he met his future wife and in 1758 they moved into the house on the edge of the Cathedral Close. Erasmus very quickly earnt himself a good reputation as a doctor and his practice flourished. He became one of the most successful and sought after doctors of the 18th century and spent 23 years in Lichfield working and raising his family. When he wasn’t spending time healing people he could be found meddling with science, botany and even inventions. Erasmus was one of the founder members of the Lunar Society of Birmingham who met once a month by the light of the full moon here at Erasmus Darwin House before moving on to Soho House, Matthew Boutlon’s home in Handsworth. The museum is open all year round and can cater for group bookings and school visits.
