Coors Brewery Visitor Centre

ImageThe Coors Visitor Centre is the new name for Burton upon Trent’s biggest tourist attraction; and the UK’s premier museum dedicated to brewing, formerly called the Bass Museum.

It first opened its doors in 1977 and, since then, much has changed.   Renamed to align with its US parents’ Coors, it is appropriately nestled alongside Britain’s biggest brewery and forms part of the Burton-based Coors Brewers Limited, whose brands include Carling, Grolsch and the recently launched Coors Fine Light Beer.

The Coors Visitor Centre occupies a ten acre site, and offers a unique insight into the history of brewing in Burton.  The original Joiners’ Shop, a grade II listed building dating back to 1866, offers three floors of historic galleries and contains items placed on loan by the trustees of the Town Museum when it closed in 1984.

England’s oldest micro-brewery also operates from the Visitor Centre, with working vessels dating back to 1830.  It is constructed on the tower principle, with a Steele’s masher, copper mash tun, steam copper, vertical cooler and open fermenting squares.  It is there that the Museum Brewing Company produces, and packages for Coors, the famous bottled conditioned beer Worthington’s White Shield.

Home to the famous four Coors Shires, the Stables provide a wonderful reminder of the role that heavy horses played within the brewing industry; delivering beer and before steam engines arrived, providing power used to operate machinery such as grinding mills.  The vintage vehicle collection and working stationary steam engine are other examples of living heritage that the venue continues to preserve.

As well as offering pre-booked tours of the main Coors brewery, the Visitor Centre also operates conference facilities and is one of Staffordshire’s top wedding venues.  A Bar, Restaurant, Beer Gift Shop and children’s play area can also be found on the site, which is open every day (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day & New Year’s Day) from 10am - 5pm.
