Weston Park, on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, is a breathtaking 17th Century Stately Home, set amidst 1,000 acres of stunning ‘Capability’ Brown parkland. The former home of the Earls of Bradford was built in 1671, it boasts a superb collection of furniture and paintings, including works by Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Stubbs. The gardens at Weston have something to offer everyone, from the formality of the terraced gardens, to the natural woodlands and tranquillity of the Temple Pool. Amazingly, for the vast majority of the 40 years Weston Park has been open to the public, these glorious gardens have been looked after by Martin Gee, Weston’s Head Gardener. He has worked at Weston Park for 35 years and his family have lived and worked on the estate for over 200 years! To complement its events programme (for details, check the calendar of events on pages 4 and 5) Weston offers visitors the unique opportunity to dine, and even stay, in the House! The Dining Room and Victorian Orangery are used for evenings of fine dining, prior to its concerts and open air plays. The Dining Room has one of the finest art collections to be found in this part of the country and includes works by Van Dyck and Caravaggio. As you dine, overlooking the terraced gardens, the cuisine reflects all the glories of a true English country house, with fresh local produce being used in the seasonal menus. Alternatively, The Victorian Orangery makes an enchanting setting for any meal. Here the natural stone walls are graced by palms and flowering bougainvillea and in mild weather you can wander through the Italian Gardens with a pre-dinner aperitif. In the colder months relax in front of a roaring fire in the Victorian Library, which houses an impressive collection of some 3,000 books. If children in your party are getting bored by now they can be well rewarded with a 12 minute journey through Temple Wood on Weston’s very own Miniature Railway or can wear themselves out at the Woodland Adventure Playground. Weston Park really does have something for everyone and is open to the public every weekend from Easter until the 2nd of September, all of Easter and Whit week and most days in July and August.
