The Garden at the Bannut
The Garden at the Bannut |
|
This year it is 21 years since Daphne & Maurice Everett bought ‘The Bannut’ at Bringsty, near Bromyard, and started planning their garden. It is set in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, with lovely views to the Malvern Hills. There are now 2 and 1/2 acres of formal and informal gardens, designed to give interest throughout the year. Manicured hedges and archways enclose garden rooms containing lawns, borders and island beds of shrubs and herbaceous plants. There are formal colour-themed gardens: a Yellow & White Garden and a romantic Arbour Garden with double borders in shades of pink, blue and silver. Near the house are the Cider Mill Garden, the Lion Garden and an unusual Knot Garden. Grassy paths meander through the Old Goat Paddock (now a shady area planted mainly with camellias, rhododendrons and a wide variety of woodland plants) to the Far Garden, with its collection of interesting trees and shrubs and masses of daffodils and cowslips in the spring. The spectacular Summer Heather Garden is a tapestry of colour in all seasons of the year: flowers in summer and autumn, plus colourful foliage in shades of gold, orange, red, silver and green. From here, the arches of the Laburnum Walk show the way to an intriguing Secret Garden, with water features and a willow house set among colourful herbaceous borders. Having explored the garden, the visitor can rest and enjoy a light lunch or afternoon tea in the heather-thatched Tea Room or among the sub-tropical plants in the Tea Garden. The home-made cakes are particularly popular with visitors, but the clear favourite is the speciality ‘Bannut Cake’, a coffee cake decorated with walnuts from the Bannut tree in the garden. There is a wide range of interesting and unusual plants in the Plant Sales area, all of which are propagated from plants growing in the garden. The garden is 2 and 1/2 miles east of Bromyard on the A44 Worcester road (1/2 mile east of the entrance to National Trust, Brockhampton) and is open (2005) from 25 March until 28 September, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays, 12.30 to 5.00pm.
