ImageThe Guardian Hay Festival is 20 this year and will be celebrating in high style.  This year’s programme continues its tradition of combining a range of cultural experiences to stimulate the mind of the thinking festival goer.  Hay is now the largest literary festival in the world and will this year run for 11 days and have over 80,000 visitors.  Hundreds of the world’s leading international writers, critics, comedians, historians, musicians, scientists, artists, actors, playwrights, directors and thinkers will take part in over 300 events at the festival.

At the time of publishing the full festival programme has yet to be completed, but we do however, have an already impressive list of writers and performers set to appear.  These include: Tariq Ali, Keith Allen, Martin Amis, Simon Armitage, Paddy Ashdown, David Attenborough, Iain Banks, Tony Benn, Cate Blanchett, Billy Bragg, Marcus Brigstocke, Scott Capurro, Ronnie Corbett, William Dalrymple, Andrew Davies, Kiran Desai, Terry Eagleton, Dave Eggers, Richard Eyre, Antonia Fraser, Bob Geldof, Rose Gray, William Hague, Sean Hughes, Clive James, Doris Lessing, Kathy Lette, John Major, Alexander McCall Smith, David Miliband, David Mitchell, John Mortimer, Edna O’Brien, Leslie Phillips, David Putnam, Ian Rankin, Ruth Rendell,  Ruth Rogers, Wole Soyinka, Graham Swift and Marina Warner...phew!

Hay Fever, the festival for children and young people, runs alongside the main festival every year.  Hay Fever is for anyone who likes stories, whether they’re a toddler or a teen. The festival chooses all the author events with the utmost care, searching out authors whose books they know children love, or whose books they hope will become firm favorites.  As well as author led events there are dozens of other ways to get involved. Children can join a workshop in flamenco, learn to paint aboriginal Australian art or even work with top authors on developing their creative writing skills.

Finally, if you just want to come and get a feel for the Festival, you are more than welcome. Hay Fever runs a Children’s Zone on the main Festival site, where parents and young people are welcome to come and relax, read, colour and
listen.
