Tissington Hall

E-mail

ImageIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to  my home, Tissington Hall.  Built by my ancestor, Francis FitzHerbert in 1609 to replace the moated manor house to the north of the church, it has served our family as our main home for the best part of 400 years.

I have gained great pleasure from turning this house into a family home and hope you will enjoy your visit to the website which tells you about all the various operations at the Hall and the Estate.  My 20 years here have seen a lot of changes as we have attempted to "diversify" our activities as well as maintaining the farming economy and the wonderful landscape.

The Tearooms

In 1999 The Old Coach House won one of the CLA's (Country Land & Business Association) most coveted awards for the best conversion of a redundant building in the East of England Region.

The Old Coach House can be contacted on 01335 350501 (Manageress, Sally Hollingsworth) with bookings being taken for special groups and parties throughout the spring and summer months.

Well Dressing

Tissington is known as the mother-place of well-dressing and this annual event on Ascension Day draws large crowds. The well-dressing takes the form of elaborate designs, using thousand of flower petals and depicting biblical or local themes. It is a skillful art, and the results are startlingly beautiful. The Tissington Well Dressings are estimated to attract 50,000 visitors each year in the week that the wells are dressed. Thus a custom which goes back to the earliest times looks certain to continue and survive for many years to come.
