Haddon Hall

E-mail

Haddon Hall is a fortified medieval manor house dating from the 12th Century, and is the home of Lord and Lady Edward Manners whose family have owned it since 1567. Described by Simon Jenkins in “1000 Best Houses’ as “the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages”, this remarkable old house is surrounded by terraced Elizabethan gardens and is set amongst the rolling countryside of the Peak District National Park.

Haddon has welcomed visitors for hundreds of years and its beauty and atmosphere never fails to enchant.
The house is open to visitors from April to October, with a number of special events being staged throughout the season. School parties and groups are very welcome.

Haddon Hall has been a popular location for feature films e.g. Pride and Prejudice (2005), Elizabeth, (1999), Franco Zeffirelli’s Jane Eyre (1996)); TV (The BBC’s production of The Prince and the Pauper; Granada Television’s Moll Flanders); the BBC’s 2006 adaptation of Jane Eyre: and a number of photo shoots for advertising and editorial work.
For the 2006 filming of the BBC’s Jane Eyre, the film crew spent 10 weeks at Haddon during the spring of 2006 and the final filming took place in May. During the height of filming the car park on the main road was turned into a film production base, with special units on site for hair, make up and wardrobe as well as space for the actors and actresses to relax between takes.

Janet O’Sullivan at Haddon said: “While the film crews were on site for 10 weeks, much of this time was before we opened the house to the public at Easter so disruption to our visitors was kept to a minimum. We have had very good reports of how Haddon is portrayed from the previews seen of the first episode, so we anticipate great interest from visitors during the autumn and again when the BBC publishes a DVD of the serial.
“We also had a great deal of interest following the filming of Pride and Prejudice with visits from all around the world and with the popularity of BBC costume dramas we hope it will encourage new visitors which is good for tourism in Derbyshire.”

Should you wish to stay locally there is excellent accommodation at Haddon Hall’s award winning hotel, The Peacock at Rowsley.
