The Heights of Abraham

E-mail

ImageVisit the Heights of Abraham in the heart of the Peak District and you will soon discover that the spectacular cable car ride high above the Derwent Valley is just the start of a truly unique day out. Since being built in 1984 the cable car system has carried millions of visitors both young and old, but the cable cars are only the latest chapter in the Heights of Abraham story.

Like most visitors, you may be surprised to learn that the Heights is in fact the area’s oldest tourist attraction, first opening as a Savage Garden in 1780 when visitors would make the climb from the valley floor on foot to witness some of the finest vistas of the surrounding Peak District. The cable cars now mean visitors reach the top without such effort, but the reward is the same as the views remain truly breathtaking.

Over two centuries later you are still able to wander around the estate with its criss-crossing paths and woodland trails, where it’s easy to understand why the area proved inspirational to the Romantic movement of the period. Make sure you don’t miss the Victoria Prospect Tower which rises up regally above the valley - climb its spiral staircase and the views get even better. Those of an inquisitive mind must visit the Who? Why? What? Story where, through the use of exhibitions and film, you will find answers to all your questions about the Heights and the construction of the cable cars... you can even test your nerve on one of the cable car emergency vehicles!

It’s not just above ground that you can explore though, as, since the Victorian era, visitors have been able to take a trip into the passageways and caverns that run into the hillside.

As long ago as Roman times lead deposits may have been found in the area, but it took another 1000 years before lead mining was officially recorded on site. The mines remained active for over 300 years and left behind a legacy of tunnels and awe inspiring caverns.

Today, thanks to all that hard work, you can follow in the miner’s footsteps, going underground to the Heights’ Famous Show Caverns. Here you can learn all about the rocks, minerals and underground formation of the Peak District, as well as experiencing a day in the life of the very miners who made your trip possible.

Children can let off steam in the two adventure play areas. You need skill and balance at the Explorers’ Challenge. For a quick adrenaline rush try the giant slide or for younger children there is the play train and climbing castle.

If all that exploring leaves you hungry, lunch can be taken in the Summit Bar, and the Hi Café is open all day serving snacks, cakes and fresh coffee. Both have picture windows and terraces, so whatever the weather you can sit back, relax and enjoy a stunning view of Derbyshire.
